I was born in Berlin to a Jewish family on my mother’s side. I studied indigo, and was instrumental in the industrial-sized synthetic production of indigo on textiles. In 1905, I received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the research of organic dyes and hydroaromatic compounds.
